How to Style Your Shelves

If you've been following Simopoulos Designs for a while, you know that we have been sharing lots of fall decorating tips and tricks. We've shared fall table decor inspiration, fall-inspired color palettes, and decor ideas to style your own shelves for fall. While we've been focusing on fall- these 5 tips on how to style your shelves can be used for any season!

Tip 1:

  • Pick a palette of about 1- 5 colors. This will limit and focus your choices while you are selecting items.

Tip 2:

  • Books make great risers! Bonus tip: Seek out hardback books of like colors at estate sales, thrift stores, and online auctions- blue, black, or white make great neutral fillers.

Tip 3:

  • Have a variety of sizes and textures and pay attention to scale; if something is too small it can lose its impact if the shelf is too long or deep, too large and it will become overpowering.

Tip 4:

  • Having an odd number of items total per shelf generally (though not 100% of the time) is the most pleasing to the eye.

Tip 5:

  • Balance the color; once everything is placed, consider picking out 1 color at a time to look at and see if your eye is hitting it in a fairly equally distributed way. Even if you are doing 1 color in different saturations, approach that the same way. Then go through the same process only with scale/proportion.

Accessorizing is often overlooked when talking about the budget of a project. Simopoulos Designs provides full service- meaning we include everything in our scope- including budgeting for styling at the end.
